April
2009 - Coffee Middle School Student Council has
approximately 30 members from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The
club sponsors, Nichole Harper and Ramona Maley, along with their
students discussed what kind of impact they wanted to make on
their brand new school that opened up in the fall of 2008. The
brand new school had much to offer the students: state of the
art technology, computer labs for each grade level, new
classroom furniture, a magnificent auditorium and a wonderful
gym. However, we all noticed that the crisp, freshly painted
walls were barren and lacking in aesthetic appeal. Knowing that
Coffee County had many talented artists, the Student Council
began discussing plans to have an artist contribute a mural to
our Commons area, a piece of art for the coming generations to
enjoy and admire.
Our very own art teacher, Sparky Smith, graciously accepted the
honor of designing the piece around our beloved school mascot,
the Trojan. Sparky has worked for many hours and many months to
construct a beautiful rendition of a Trojan man and Trojan
woman. He first constructed his design using Prismacolor pencil
on illustration board. Once the drawing was complete, Michael
and Johnny Saylor sent the original drawing to be scanned at
Colson's Graphics in Valdosta. One Stop Promo was able to
transfer the scanned image onto a hanging vinyl banner that
measured 11 feet by 14 feet.
Last
school year, Student Council, along with the support of faculty
and staff, hosted two school dances in the gym. Students danced
the night away, enjoying music, refreshments and friendship. All
proceeds of the dances went to the cost of having Sparky’s art
work transformed into two gorgeous wall hangings. One hangs
proudly in the commons area for all to enjoy and one hangs in
the auditorium to be admired by all those that attend our school
functions.
Student Council has truly enjoyed being a part of beautifying
our new school. We are proud of our school and more importantly
proud of our extremely talented art teacher, Sparky Smith. We
encourage you all to come and see impact this mural has made on
our school. |
